London Council ‘Cancels’ Flyposters

Author: admin

Councillors in Tower Hamlets have started pasting ‘cancelled’ stickers across party posters illicitly displayed on walls in the East London borough in an imaginative tactic to deter fly poster companies.

“We’re showing would-be fly-posters that they’ll be wasting their money if they put up illegal advertisements in the borough,” Councillor Shahed Ali explained in a statement.

“It can take up to 45 minutes to remove just one poster and often scraps of paper are left behind – but it only takes a couple seconds stick the ‘It’s Cancelled’ sticker on. This is a creative way to crack down on fly-posting,” he added.

In more East London clubland news acclaimed Shoreditch triangle venue Plastic People reopened recently after a 6 week hiatus ordered by the police.

Writing on the wall of Facebook group ‘Keep Plastic People Alive’ when the club re-opened on July 24, Plastic People spokesperson ‘Deck Queenz’ said they’ve introduced a compulsory 1.45am no more admission rule and issued an apologetic statement thanking the police for the new regulations.

“Due to proper concerns about the use of illegal drugs in Plastic People and the sale of alcohol after permitted hours on 11 February 2010 Hackney Police lodged a Review of Plastic People’s Premises License. The management of Plastic People accept that the police concerns were justified and have been working closely with the police to ensure standards are improved,” they said.

“Plastic People has a zero tolerance attitude to drugs and are grateful for the assistance of police in highlighting these serious issues,” the statement added.

DEA Looking For ‘Yo’ ‘Ho’ Linguists

Author: admin

America’s anti-drug secret police force the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) in Atlanta have published ‘help wanted’ adverts on their website looking for nine candidates able to understand ‘ebonics’, the term for  ‘street slang’ language used by predominantly African Americans.

The Guardian reported this week that the DEA need ebonics speakers to interpret drug dealers recorded on wiretaps using phrases such as ‘is he shook?’ (meaning ‘is he scared?’) and ‘I need a re-up’ (meaning ‘I need resupplying’, usually with drugs).

“A lot of times people think you’re just dealing with a few slang words, and that you can finesse your way around it,” Stanford University language expert Professor John Rickford told AP”, And it’s not – it’s a big vocabulary. You’ll have some significant differences,” he added.

Details of the DEA plan were revealed just as the Wall Street Journal reported that psychologists and drug counselors are reporting unprecedented levels of drug use amongst merchant bankers in the States, suggesting linguists conversant with Wall Street patois could be even more effective.

Brad Lamm from Intervention Specialists told the Wall Street Journal that ‘“the titans of Wall Street normalize crazy behavior all the time’ and said many of his executive patients are using cocaine and crack. Robert Curry from rehab company Turning Point For Leaders agreed.

“Investment bankers — gunslingers, as we call them — are highly prone to addiction,” he said, “And there’s a lot of denial among employers. The attitude is: ‘If they can’t fix themselves, then they’re going to have to live with it. We’re not going to put any time and effort into it.’ (Wall Street Journal: http://m1e.net/c?79584049-lkB/6l9ezbIVY%405651857-gJTs5V843228Q )

http://m1e.net/c?79584049-y6MtTwV8bt92o%405651858-FoA2Uk5sLYkQY (‘When it comes to identifying addictions, one should remember that “if you suspect there is a problem, there probably is one.” People with addictions are so driven to continue using drugs or alcohol that they are very cunning at hiding the problem, not only from others but also from themselves. They often fail to see the inevitable changes in their functioning at work, home and with friends; changes that are invariably noticed by others . . .’)

Exceptions to this policy may be made for applicants who admit to limited youthful and experimental use of marijuana . . .’)

Good Times supremo Norman Jay MBE has called on revellers attending this weekend’s Notting Hill Carnival (NHC) to only buy food and drink from official Good Times bars and stalls, revealing that he’s nowadays having to spend thousands of pounds of his own money to continue performing at the event.

“EVERY POUND you consciously spend with Good Times over this coming weekend, be it on our after-party tickets, our merchandise, our licenced bars or food from our much loved Soul Kitchen, means you are DIRECTLY contributing financially to our continued survival at NHC,” Norman declared in a mission statement posted on his website (his capitals).

“EVERY POUND you spend with Good Times over the coming weekend is ploughed straight BACK to help offset the enormous personal cost (to us) of staging of this unique event,” he continued.

“We make absolutely NO MONEY from playing NHC at all (and haven’t done for several years). In fact over the last few years, it is OURSELVES who have financially underwritten Good Times at carnival to the tune of several thousand pounds to ensure we are there for YOU come August bank holiday weekend, as increasingly, trying to attract media partners (sponsors) to an event like NHC is proving more and more difficult each year for various reasons (which I’m not at liberty to discuss here).”

“Missing carnival is NOT an option for us. This is a financial situation that is totally unsustainable for us as any right-minded person would agree.”

“That is why THIS year in particular, Good Times implores you NOT to buy food or drinks from ANY unlicenced ‘wheely bin’ street hawkers or other unregulated ‘chancers’ operating illegally in and around our SOUTHERN ROW site, for they do NOT contribute a single penny towards NHC or pay hefty licenced bar/stall/food fees or liability insurance (as we HAVE to) for the right to trade or sell anything around our Good Times bus,” he added.

The hugely popular DJ personally attracts thousands of revellers to the street event each year, though chatting to UK news portal Don’t Panic this week, revealed that he spends as least £10,000 each year ‘before we’ve even put a record on.’

“Every sound system has to pay for their spot. It’s not just the clean-up, we have to pay to be at carnival,” he revealed.

He also suggested the huge upfront fees required by licensing authorities nowadays are being set deliberately high to deter new sound systems from becoming involved and to and keep young people away altogether.

“Ultimately that’s what they want, because they want to kill carnival off. We know that, that’s a fact,” said Norman, “They can’t stop it legally so they try and stop it through price. Make it too expensive to partake.” (Don’t Panic: http://m1e.net/c?79584049-hl6TtxfZ2BURQ%405651856-igtHzsT/uDdJM )

Mark Moore: Malcolm McLaren – Let It Rock

Author: admin

Very saddened to hear about the passing of Malcolm McLaren. As a 15 year old I hung out in Malcolm Mclaren and Vivienne Westwood’s Seditionaries shop in the Kings Rd. It was always a hive of creativity in there, an Aladdin’s cave, and no one seemed to mind some kid hanging around. Their conversations inspired me no end – Malcolm always encouraging people to be themselves and break the rules whenever possible.

Years later myself and William Orbit found ourselves working with Malcolm on a bunch of remixes from his ‘Waltz Darling’ album. Malcolm came to the studio to collaborate and on his arrival began recounting tales, both old and new, of the Sex Pistols and beyond. Me and William sat there like kids listening to an expert raconteur.

After two days of this we had to order him out of the studio as we hadn’t actually started any work! We could easily have listened to more. The track ‘Deep In Vogue’ went to number one in the US Billboard Dance chart and along with ‘Something’s Jumpin’ In Your Shirt’ from the same sessions are two of the remixes I’m most proud of. Malcolm continues to inspire me today and one couldn’t hope for a better teacher of subversion.

Great Malcolm McLaren interview on BBC iPlayer (but hurry – it’s only up for 6 more days!). Malcolm gives me a lovely shout out on PART3 which made me all misty eyed. It’s a brilliant 3 part Malcolm show. Enjoy!
