The Glenfiddich Independent Mix consistently showcases the best artists from around the globe from old school giants such as
Steve Reid to trailblazers in the genre like
Nostalgia 77. Every now and then Brazilian legends drop in and perform incredible improvised sets like
Ed Motta last month. And with the Godfather of everything broken beat, funk dipped and jazzed out;
Gilles Peterson hosting and DJing at every gig, free cocktails and a minimal entrance fee, that's why as nu-jazz nights go, you cannot do better than
The Glenfiddich Independent Mix.
This month we see the return on
Ski Oakenfull, producer, remixer, nu-jazz, and one of the first people to play for the
"Worldwide" night for
Cargo, many moons ago. Come witness
Ski's triumphant return at the
Independent Mix.
Variously described as 'nu-jazz house kingpin', 'Love God' and plain old 'Dominic' to his Mum & Dad,
Ski Oakenfull is a highly gifted keyboard player, writer and producer. He first made an impact in 1991 with the
K-Creative, one of the initial signings to the then newly established
Talkin' Loud Records.
Ski joined UK soul-funk band
Raw Stylus as keys man (touring & recording with legendary
Steely Dan producer
Gary Katz) and regularly performed with the in house band at
Gilles Peterson's seminal club nights at
Bar Rumba in London.
After a hectic couple of years touring the world with
2 banks of 4 and
Earl Zinger, and writing and production work with
Bluey from
Incognito,
Ski completed his second album
'Rising Son' at the beginning of 2005. Featuring the amazing talents of
Amp Fiddler,
Chi Turner,
Earl Zinger and
Valerie Etienne, it initially saw a release in Japan via
Pony Canyon and then later in the year via
BBE.
Ski's recently been busy in the studio completing another project entitled
'Ayota' which is much more of an electronic/ambient affair and was lucky enough to perform it live at the
Big Chill Festival this year. This album is scheduled for release in March/April 2006 via
Third Ear Records.
Joining
Gilles and
Karen this month are DJ's from
BBE, the record label behind
"Strange Funky Games and Things", "
Osunlade /
Re-Offering" and the two new
Roy Ayers E.P; a truly quality label with a mind for product quality over product profit.
So once again
Cargo and
Glenfiddich come together to offer something different with fantastic music, sophisticated drinks and an unpretentious atmosphere. All for £6 in advance and a free cocktail thrown into the mix.
We've got 3 pairs of tickets to give away to the lucky people that can answer this simple question;
Name a band/artist that Ski has performed with?
