Berlin Festival 2012
Of Monsters and Men, Grimes, Clock Opera, Django Django and Dada Life join the lineup for Berlin Festival 2012
http://www.berlinfestival.de

The Berlin Festival line-up continues to grow to epic proportions with new additions Of Monsters And Men, Grimes, Clock Opera, iamamiwhoami, Djang Django and Dada Life. These trailblazing acts will take to the stage at Berlin’s historic Tempelhof Airport on September 7th and 8th 2012, joining an already impressive bill that includes Sigur Rós, Franz Ferdinand, Orbital, Little Dragon, Friendly Fires, The Killers, Metronomy, SBTRKT and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs.

Not a day goes by without Canadian artist Claire Boucher aka Grimes being highlighted as ‘one to watch’ and with the recent release of her third album Visions receiving critical acclaim across the globe, 2012 is definitely shaping up to be her year. We’re excited to see what she has in store for the Tempelhof crowd! Also making their Berlin Festival debut this year is Iceland six-piece Of Monsters And Men. Unlike many other European bands, Of Monsters & Men made it big in the US first, before European success came their way. But it wasn’t long before the word spread across the pond fuelled by the release of their hit single and video ‘Little Talks’ and debut album, My Head Is An Animal. There’s no doubt the band is a must-see this summer. Continuing the Nordic flavour is a Swedish act which have taken Europe by storm of late. Electro House duo Dada Life will also leave their native Sweden to get behind the DJ booth at Club Xberg. Known for their high energy and giant inflatables, these two certainly know how to get the party started and are guaranteed to keep the crowd dancing well into the early hours.

Now, what happens when four art students get together to mix up electro and krautrock? Projects like Django Django, that’s what. The band’s album has been praised by NME as a ‘heady explosion of colours’ and they will be spreading a ray of colourful light on the Berlin Festival Crowd on Saturday 8th September. And last but by no means least, another band known for their unique sound and love of digital collage’ slicing and dicing sounds and lyrics – British act Clock Opera performing songs from their debut album, Ways To Forget.

All confirmed acts so far…

Frank Eddie, the new brainchild of Fred Deakin (ex-Lemon Jelly), has been releasing a series of vinyl only releases, via his own Impotent Fury imprint. Indicative of Fred’s sound moving forward, the song showcases an effortless progression through kraut rock, disco and R&B, while never abandoning the innate sense of fun that has won him legions of fans in the past. During his 10 years with Lemon Jelly (who are currently on hiatus), Fred enjoyed vast critical acclaim as well as Mercury Music Prize and BRIT Award nominations.

Entering into its seventh year, The Beat-Herder Festival will be returning to rural Lancashire with its unique formula of live music, locally sourced food & drink and an unpretentious Northern ethos. Based on the simple desire to ‘bring good people together to have a good time in beautiful surroundings’, Beat-Herder is one of the few festivals on the circuit that eschews sponsorship, corporate branding and egos in favour of independent and local stall owners and a refreshingly hand-crafted site, creating a utopia from the outside world for 3 days each summer.

Over the years The Beat-Herder has grown to become nestled perfectly into the landscape around it. The famous Toil Trees stage, one of the most unique festival locations in the country, is set amongst tall firs, draped with throws and sails with spinning images projected onto the trunks and leaves. 2012 will continue to see new venues added that make the most of the beautiful natural surroundings, which includes over 4000 flowers which are lovingly nurtured from seed.

The infamous Beat-Herder Working Men’s Club, a mock-up of a working men’s club run by a group of Bette Lynch-esque ladies, will be making a much-welcomed return (expect Bingo, the hilarious ‘Beat-Herder’s Got Talent’, drag queen acts and much more), plus look out for the Raj themed ‘Rajazzle Tent’, which will be hosting unsigned acts ranging from hip hop to Bangra and a selection of top notch comedy acts on the Sunday.

There will be several other unique features to the festival including tasty home-made cakes and pies which can only be found in Lancashire and the intriguingly collectively titled ‘Crazed Inventions’ which include vibrating benches and a network of tunnels that lead you to different zones, ‘The Street’, a thespian orientated experience where one can get a tattoo, a haircut or a wet shave, browse the book shop and antiques emporium, or play records in the DIY Garage disco and transport yourself to different areas of the festival via the teleport phone box tunnel system .

For the first time, Boutique Camping will be available at The Beat-Herder. Accommodation will range from tipis, yurts and bell tents, all lovingly made locally by a close friend of the festival. There will be plenty of hot showers and flushing toilets for the more discerning punters. In typical Beat-Herder fashion these will be some of the most affordable boutique options on the festival circuit.

The Beat-Herder Festival is the brainchild of six creative Yorkshire men who were tired of overcrowded and pretentious festivals that were overrun with the same big brands and corporate sponsors. After first establishing in 2006, the festival has grown year on year both in terms of capacity and line up, and yet crucially the atmosphere remains one that is intimate, charming and above all friendly. For the first time, Boutique Camping will be available at the festival. Accommodation will range from tipi, yurt and bell tent and there will be plenty of hot showers and flushing toilet for the more discerning punters. The Beat-Herder attracts an extremely loyal crowd, so much so that 180 people have had The Beat-Herder logo tattooed, an indication of the passion put into making people feel at home at the festival.

‘A completely back to basics festival, it’s built upon the simple principles of having fun, having a dance, and escaping the corporate machine for one weekend’ – NME

‘They say less is more. And there’s no stronger proof on the festival circuit than Lancashire’s petite beats fest’ – Clash

‘Beat Herder is also the most heart-on-sleeve northern festival we’ve been to’ – Drowned in Sound

JAZZANOVA – NEW ALBUM

Jazzanova takes it to the next stage: The Funkhaus Studio Sessions.

SK237CD – Jazzanova – Funkhaus Studio Session with Band & Paul Randolph

Whoever had the chance to see Jazzanova play live during the last three years knows how magical this experience can be. The Berlin based outfit transports the richness and sublimity of their productions (own compositions and remixes) perfectly on stage. And it adds this extra twist to the performance which makes the music even more tangible and human. In last November the 2 producers of Jazzanova, Stefan Leisering & Axel Reinemer & the original Jazzanova touring band (see below for full line up) brought the spirit of their extensive worldwide tour to the studio to record a typical live set – this time with proper recording gear and state-of-art engineering equipment though.

The “Funkhaus Studio Sessions” marks Jazzanova’s first live album release. Including the songs the band learned to love the most on tour over the last three years as well as the audience’s favourites: From their initial breakthrough smash “Fedime’s Flight” to “Look What You’re Doin To Me” off the “Of All The Things” album from 2008 and renditions and interpretations of Jazzanova remixes (f.e. the remix for Fat Freddy’s Drop’s “Flashback“). The 14 track strong set also includes a brand new tune with “I Human“, co-written by vocalist and bass player Paul Randolph, a constant member of the live band and now of course the voice of the “Funkaus Studio Sessions“. An album that will please every Jazzanova fan and every true music lover with an affinity for warm, soulful, deep and genuine musicianship. When have you last heard a studio album so alive, fleshly, organic and solid a! t the same time? It captures the feeling of a live recording but without any flaws due to poor recording equipment or sound aesthetics.

The sessions at the legendary GDR Rundfunk Orchestra studios in East Berlin have also been filmed. Check out the accompanying videos to “I Human” , “Believer” or “Let It Go” (private video – exclusive for Sonar Kollektiv Newsletter subscribers!). Watch out for a special DVD to come including the complete session and bonus material.

The musicians involved in this recording: Paul Randolph (Vocals), Arne Jansen (Guitar), Carl Michael Grabinger (Drums), Sebastian Studnitzky (Keys), Sebastian Borkowski (Sax/Flute), Stefan Ulrich (Trombone), Paul Kleber (Bass), Axel Reinemer (Electronics / Percussion), Stefan Leisering (Congas, Synths, Ampli-Celeste).

Session Victim can do no wrong in our eyes. Not only do they run an absolutely brilliant vinyl-only label known as Retreat with the help of fellow Berliner Quarion. Not only do they play an amazing live set which has seen recent fans at London’s Corsica Studios get so worked up they started crowd-surfing. Not only were they responsible for last years’ underground hit Good Intentions which is so good it had Move D in tears as he closed a festival set with it last summer. On top of all this they’re the nicest and most focused couple of chaps you ever did meet. In short, we’re very proud and happy to be presenting their debut LP The Haunted House Of House on our humble label. As with our last LP from the mighty 6th Borough Project, we have made the LP available as both a beautifully packaged triple pack vinyl as well as CD.

Opening track Dark Sienna sets the mood and serves as a good taster of what you can expect from their highly accomplished debut. We’re talking looped up deep-disco territory here with a lovely mid-tempo rolling groove driven along by open hats and a square wave bassline, lush string sections and dubbed vocal hits all adding heat to the mix. Zoinks continues the theme with the perfect balance of organic drums, dusty stabs and a healthy dose of solid gold machine-funk. Push Comes To Shove follows, upping the pace slightly and resulting in one of the more obvious floor friendly cuts (or should i say as obvious as it gets with Session Victim!)

Next up is the more laid back yet still seriously head-nodding vibe of Alpine Glow on which the SV boys even manage to make a cut-up Mark King-esque slap bass sample sound good! Haunted House dives straight in next with an uptempo jam featuring a heavy disco groove and compressed pads laced with subtle arpeggiating acid lines. Some Balearic vibes are offered up next as things continue with Cow Palace and Bison until we’re hit with a special new LP version of Good Intentions, the original having been only available on vinyl so far.

Time to shake things up a bit next with a definite highlight of the LP - Light Scent of Decay. As the acronym of the title suggests we are heading straight into psychedelic territory with this beautiful 9 minute and 40 second long live jam drawing us deep into its pleasantly off-kilter confines. Next the boys drop it down a bit for Fine, which sees the duo opt for some headnodding hip hop vibes. And finally we have the spellbinding Flying Visit to leave us on a total high.

Coming on like some long-lost Nightmares On Wax classic, we are treated to a gentle Balearic beauty which should leave you in no doubt that you’re in capable hands with Session Victim at the helm.

Sónar São Paulo 2012 will be presenting more than 50 shows in the Brazilian city’s Anhembi Parque on 11 and 12 May and will be Sónar’s largest event outside Spain yet.

The festival consists of three stages with different capacities, located in the Anhembi Parque venue: SonarClub(the main stage, which will host the large format shows), SonarVillage (partially covered, with artificial grass, and the stage for the artists who are part of the programme curated by Red Bull Music Academy, among others), and SonarHall (the covered auditorium featuring more experimental ideas and approaches).

As well as these three stages, there are the areas devoted to SonarPro, including the SonarCinema screening room.

The Sónar São Paulo line-up includes the outstanding new show in 3 dimensions from Kraftwerk, one of the most influential groups in music history.

Besides the new show from Kraftwerk, the festival presents outstanding international names in today’s music, including James Blake, Chromeo, Mogwai, Justice, Squarepusher, Modeselektor, Flying Lotus, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, Four Tet, Cee Lo Green, Jeff Mills, Little Dragon and DOOM, to name just a fews.

The festival will also be paying special attention to the exciting and dynamic creative scene in Brazil, a country with an impressive musical tradition from which top drawer artists continue to emerge, and many of them will be present at Sónar São Paulo, including: Gui Boratto, Ricardo Donoso, Gang Do Eletro, M Takara Vs. Akin, Bruno Belluomini, Nedu Lopes, Psilosamples, Pazes, Emicida, Dago…

Meanwhile, Red Bull Music Academy will be responsible for curating part of the SonarVillage stage withFlying Lotus, DOOM, James Pants, Cut Chemist, Rustie, James Holden, Tiger & Woods, DJ Zegon & Sonidos Unidos Sound System, Pazes and Mauricio Fleury.

The SonarPro São Paulo programme features the Canadians Eski (specialists in the technology used for big shows), Brazil’s Muti Randolph (whose works fall between technological design and architectural spaces) and the Catalans Conductr (the creators of audio applications for mobile phones), Jocabola (systems generators and data visualization) and Reactable Systems (inventors of the popular interactive table/instrument Reactable), among others and SonarCinema, the festival’s space for films, documentaries and audiovisual pieces.

DROP THE LIME

UNVEILS NEW SINGLE ‘BANDIT BLUES’
OUT 21st MAY THROUGH ULTRA MUSIC

FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM ‘ENTER THE NIGHT’
OUT 2nd JULY

NYC-based producer/DJ DROP THE LIME—born Luca Venezia–is branching out. For his album ‘Enter The Night’, out 2nd July on Ultra Music, he adds songwriter, guitarist and vocalist to his credits. With passion for bass and a thirst for blood, he weaves a baroque night time fantasy, riding the range from the ashes of rave into the dark heart of rock & roll. The first official single from the album is ‘Bandit Blues,’ out 21st May, with its accompanying video to be made available soon.

His music (like his life) is an epic adventure of mystery, heartbreak and magic, combining the gun-slinging swagger of Ennio Morricone, the techno grandeur of Underworld, and the storytelling prowess of Johnny Cash. As influenced by Richie Valens as Richie Hawtin, ‘Bandit Blues’ finds Venezia marrying his blues guitar licks and unmistakably sultry croon to the sheer dance music wizardry that has become his trademark. It was New York City—where, in addition to New Orleans and London, he recorded the album–that was the draw for ‘Bandit Blues.’

“Being born there and having so much love for the city means I wear it on my sleeve,” says Venezia of ‘Enter The Night’s first single. “It’s an incredible inspiration for me, but right now, it feels like there’s a lot of struggle going on with the economy and the people. The economy being a mess, politics being a mess–everything is a mess. The only way to really enjoy it is through music.”
