Unquote isn’t exactly a massive entity throughout the commercial world of d’n’b, but that’s exactly the charm of this subdued but exciting new name in the world of alternative drum and bass (although already championed by wide-ranging supporters from dBridge to Blu Mar Ten, Loxy and even German superstar Tom Novy). Unquote is the latest in a long line of Russian luminaries to step forward and add another tangent on this typically British music form as he steps up to release his debut album ‘Reverberation Box’; real name Vsevolod Ermakov, he wowed the underground with his appearance on Hospital Records’ ‘The Future Sound of Russia’, Unquote makes soundscapes wrapped in drum patterns and tickling percussion, pitch shifting and fluctuating in tempo that sees him drift between the 140 – 170bpm mark. Soulful, delicate, mournful and joyous, drum and bass has never felt so ambient, so personal and heart-warming in its arrangement, delivery and execution.
